About Monounsaturated Fat Levels

Monounsaturated fats are the ones that dominate olive oil, avocado and nuts, and unlike the omega-3 and omega-6 families the body can make them itself. That means the amount in blood reflects both what is eaten and how much is being produced internally. This position sits inside PDXDC1, in the coding part of the gene, though the change it makes leaves the protein sequence untouched. It comes out attached to the proportion of monounsaturated fat measured in blood in large metabolite studies.

Good to know: This describes a blood level, not how much of the nutrient you need or should take. Blood levels move with diet, season and time of day as well as with genetics. The genetic effect measured here is small next to intake.

Fun fact: Unlike omega-3 and omega-6 fats, monounsaturated fats are not essential in the diet: the body can make them from scratch.

Discovery: Blood fatty acid composition was mapped in genome-wide metabolite studies.

The Variant

The single variant behind this trait

Gene: PDXDC1

Variant (rsID): rs3198697

Location: Chr 16:15,036,083

dbSNP rs3198697

Other lifestyle traits

Omega-6 Levels: A change near COBLL1, linked to what share of your blood fatty acids is linoleic acid, the main omega-6.

Omega-3 Conversion: A variant in the gene for the desaturase enzyme that converts plant-based omega-3 fats into the long-chain forms the body actually uses.

Vitamin B12 Transport: A change in transcobalamin, the protein that carries vitamin B12 into your cells, affecting how much of your B12 is in the usable form.
