About Omega-6 Levels

Linoleic acid is the omega-6 that dominates sunflower, corn and soy oil, and it is the most abundant polyunsaturated fat in most modern diets by a wide margin. The body cannot make it, so all of it comes from food - but what share of blood fatty acids it ends up as depends on how the body handles fats too. This position sits near COBLL1 and comes out attached to that share in large metabolite studies. It is the omega-6 counterpart to the two omega-3 cards on this site.

Good to know: This is the share of blood fatty acids that is omega-6, not an amount eaten. The body cannot make linoleic acid, so all of it comes from food. Cooking oil accounts for far more of the variation between people than genotype does.

Fun fact: Linoleic acid intake rose enormously through the twentieth century as seed oils became cheap, which makes it one of the most changed components of the human diet.

Discovery: Blood fatty acid proportions were mapped in genome-wide metabolite studies.

The studies

Genome-wide characterization of circulating metabolic biomarkers (Karjalainen MK et al., Nature, 2024)

Other lifestyle traits

Omega-3 Conversion: A variant in the gene for the desaturase enzyme that converts plant-based omega-3 fats into the long-chain forms the body actually uses.

Vitamin B12 Transport: A change in transcobalamin, the protein that carries vitamin B12 into your cells, affecting how much of your B12 is in the usable form.

Folate Processing: A variant in the control region of the enzyme that converts synthetic folic acid into the active folate your cells use.
