Editorial Standards

Who writes the pages on ReadYourDNA, where their facts come from, and how a mistake gets fixed.

One author for every page

Every page on ReadYourDNA is written and edited by Martin Pechhacker, a molecular biologist and bioinformatician (MSc, University of Vienna). That includes the guides, the comparison page and every variant, medication, trait and lifestyle page: each one was read and corrected by hand before it went up. His background is on the About page.

Sources behind every number

Every number on a page names the study or the database it comes from, so it can be traced back.

Variant pages: the published studies each page cites, linked to PubMed, with population frequencies from gnomAD and classifications from ClinVar.

Medication pages: the CPIC and DPWG prescribing guidelines and the PharmGKB annotations behind each gene and medication.

Trait pages: published polygenic scores from the PGS Catalog and the genome-wide studies behind them.

Lifestyle pages: the studies each trait rests on, linked by their PubMed ID.

Guides and the comparison page: a list of sources at the end of each page.

How these sources become the results of an analysis is described on the science page.

Checked before it goes up

Before a page goes up, what it says is compared with the sources it cites. On a variant page that means which form of the variant a study links to an effect, and how common each form is; on a medication page, which guideline covers which gene. Guides and the comparison page are checked against their sources again before their date moves.

Information, not advice

The pages explain what studies found in large groups of people. They do not diagnose anything, do not give medical advice and never tell anyone to start, stop or change a medication. Questions about your own health belong with a doctor, a pharmacist or a genetic counsellor.

How old is a page?

Variant, medication, trait and lifestyle pages show the month their content last changed, at the foot of the page. Guides and the comparison page show the day they were last checked against their sources. A date moves only when a page really changes or is checked again.

Comparison pages

Every fact about another service names the page it was read from and the day it was read. The two services stand side by side without a verdict, each comparison includes what the other service does better, and every fact is checked again at least once a quarter. ReadYourDNA earns nothing from the services it compares: no ads, no affiliate links, no paid placements.

Found a mistake?

Write to support@readyourdna.com with the page's address and what looks wrong. Martin answers, normally within 48 hours. A confirmed error is corrected on the page, and its date moves with the fix.
