About Calcium Levels

Blood calcium is one of the most tightly controlled numbers in the body: parathyroid hormone and vitamin D adjust it continuously by moving calcium in and out of bone and changing how much the kidney keeps. Because it is defended so hard, blood calcium says almost nothing about how much calcium is in the skeleton. Large studies still find small differences in where the set point sits, and this position is one of them.

Good to know: This describes a blood level, not how much of the nutrient you need or should take. Blood levels move with diet, season and time of day as well as with genetics. The genetic effect measured here is small next to intake.

Fun fact: Blood calcium is held so tightly that the body will dissolve bone to maintain it, which is why a blood test tells you nothing about skeletal calcium.

Discovery: Blood calcium was mapped genome-wide in UK Biobank.

The Variant

The single variant behind this trait

Gene: Near LINC02029

Variant (rsID): rs900399

Location: Chr 3:157,080,943

dbSNP rs900399

The studies

A scalable variational inference approach for increased mixed-model association power (Loya H et al., Nature genetics, 2025)

Other lifestyle traits

Magnesium Levels: A change in a mucin gene expressed in the kidney, linked to circulating magnesium in large studies.

Monounsaturated Fat Levels: A change inside the PDXDC1 gene, linked to how much monounsaturated fat circulates in blood.

Omega-6 Levels: A change near COBLL1, linked to what share of your blood fatty acids is linoleic acid, the main omega-6.
