Ursodeoxycholic acid (ursodiol, UDCA) is a naturally occurring bile acid that makes bile less toxic to liver cells and helps it flow. It is the first-line treatment for primary biliary cholangitis, and is used to dissolve some cholesterol gallstones and for itching in pregnancy (intrahepatic cholestasis). It is sold as Actigall, Urso and Ursofalk, among other names.
Ursodeoxycholic acid is absorbed, taken up by the liver and recycled with the body's own bile acids, without CYP breakdown. The gene study listed, in primary biliary cholangitis, looked at MGAT5 for response. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
