Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI): it switches off the pumps in the stomach lining that release acid. It is used for heartburn and acid reflux, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and as part of the treatment that clears Helicobacter pylori. It is sold as Aciphex and Pariet, among other names.
Rabeprazole is broken down largely without enzymes, so CYP2C19 affects it less than other PPIs, although poor metabolizers still have somewhat higher levels, which the US FDA lists as an effect on drug levels. Many studies, mostly from Japan and China, compared Helicobacter cure rates by CYP2C19 type. CPIC's PPI guideline covers omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and dexlansoprazole, not rabeprazole.
