Advair

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Advair

What it is

Fluticasone/salmeterol combines an inhaled corticosteroid, which calms airway inflammation, with salmeterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist that keeps the airways open for about 12 hours. It is taken twice daily from one inhaler to control asthma and to reduce flare-ups in COPD. It is sold as Advair, Seretide and Wixela, among other names.

How genes come into it

Both parts are broken down by CYP3A4, so strong CYP3A4 blockers such as ritonavir can raise fluticasone to levels with body-wide steroid effects. The gene studies listed looked at CHRM2, IL10, IL17A and ZNF432 for lung function response in asthma. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Response (6 findings)

Studies of how well it worked in people carrying a variant.

CHRM2 rs6962027: Allele A is associated with response to fluticasone/salmeterol in people with Asthma as compared to allele T.

CHRM2 rs6962027: Allele A is associated with response to fluticasone/salmeterol in people with Asthma as compared to allele T.

CHRM2 rs8191992: Allele A is associated with response to fluticasone/salmeterol in people with Asthma as compared to allele T.

IL10 rs3024498: Genotypes CC + CT is associated with decreased clinical benefit to budesonide, fluticasone/salmeterol, formoterol or omalizumab in children with Asthma as compared to genotype TT.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
