Remimazolam (Byfavo)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Remimazolam

What it is

Remimazolam is an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine given by injection for sedation during procedures such as endoscopy and bronchoscopy, and in some countries for general anaesthesia. Like midazolam it strengthens GABA signalling, but blood and tissue esterases break it down within minutes, so people recover quickly. It is sold as Byfavo.

How genes come into it

Remimazolam is broken down by the liver esterase CES1, not by CYP enzymes. The gene studies listed looked at CES1 variants for its clearance. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
