Methacholine

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Methacholine

What it is

Methacholine is a substance related to acetylcholine that narrows the airways by acting on muscarinic receptors. It is not a treatment: it is breathed in during a lung function test (bronchial challenge) to see how sensitive the airways are, which helps confirm or rule out asthma. It is sold as Provocholine.

How genes come into it

The few gene studies on methacholine used the challenge test as a measure of airway sensitivity and looked at ADRB2, the beta-2 receptor that asthma relievers act on, and RUNX1. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

What research found

Every published finding on gene variants and Methacholine. Upload your DNA file to see which of these rows apply to you.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

ADRB2 rs1042713: Level 3. Efficacy: Asthma. 1.

Response (1 finding)

Studies of how well it worked in people carrying a variant.

ADRB2 rs1042713: Genotype AA is associated with decreased response to methacholine in people with Asthma as compared to genotype GG.

Other findings (2 findings)

Studies that do not fall into the groups above.

RUNX1 rs11702779: Genotype AA is associated with increased response to methacholine in children with Asthma as compared to genotypes AG + GG.

RUNX1 rs11702779: Genotypes AG + GG are associated with increased response to methacholine in children with Asthma.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
