Didanosine (Videx)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Didanosine

What it is

Didanosine (ddI) was one of the early HIV medicines, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that stops viral DNA from growing. Because of serious side effects such as pancreatitis, nerve damage and liver problems, it has been withdrawn in most countries and replaced by safer medicines. It was sold as Videx.

How genes come into it

Didanosine is broken down partly by purine nucleoside phosphorylase and xanthine oxidase (XDH), and activated inside cells. The few gene studies on it looked at XDH and NT5C2 for side effects such as pancreatitis and nerve damage. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Rated evidence (4 rated variants)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

XDH rs1594160: Level 3. Toxicity: HIV infectious disease. 1.

NT5C2 rs11191561: Level 3. Toxicity: HIV infectious disease. 1.

XDH rs1429376: Level 3. Toxicity: HIV infectious disease. 1.
