NRTIs (class)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About NRTIs

What it is

Nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are a class of antivirals that are built into viral DNA as it is copied and stop the chain from growing. The class includes tenofovir, emtricitabine, lamivudine, abacavir and zidovudine; most HIV treatment combinations contain two of them, and some also treat hepatitis B. This page collects studies on NRTIs as a group.

How genes come into it

PharmGKB lists a single low-rated finding for the class as a group. The strongest gene finding for an NRTI is HLA-B*57:01 and abacavir hypersensitivity, covered by CPIC and DPWG guidelines on the abacavir page. Most NRTIs are cleared by the kidneys and activated inside cells, so the common liver-enzyme genes matter little.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.
