Emtricitabine (Emtriva)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Emtricitabine

What it is

Emtricitabine (FTC) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor closely related to lamivudine: it is built into viral DNA and stops it from growing. It is part of most tenofovir-based HIV combination tablets, such as Truvada, Descovy and Biktarvy, used for treatment and for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). It is sold on its own as Emtriva.

How genes come into it

Emtricitabine is cleared mostly unchanged by the kidneys. The gene study listed looked at ABCC2, a transporter, for its levels. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
