About Physical Activity

How active someone is looks like the least genetic thing imaginable - it is a choice, made daily, shaped by work and habit and whether it is raining. Very large surveys still find small genetic signals in it, and this is one of them. It sits in NSF, a gene involved in how vesicles fuse inside cells, in a well-known stretch of chromosome 17 that carries a large inversion. Nothing here is a statement about what you are capable of.

Good to know: Self-reported activity is a rough measurement, so any genetic signal in it is faint. This says nothing about capability, only about what large groups reported doing. Circumstance decides how much anyone moves far more than genotype does.

Fun fact: Accelerometer studies consistently show people report more activity than they actually do, which is one reason genetic signals here are so small.

Discovery: Physical activity was mapped genome-wide in large population cohorts.

The Variant

The single variant behind this trait

Gene: NSF

Variant (rsID): rs199533

Location: Chr 17:46,751,565

dbSNP rs199533

Other lifestyle traits

Heart Rate Recovery: A change in a sodium channel that helps set heart rhythm, linked to how quickly the pulse drops after exercise.

Muscle Composition: Whether your fast-twitch muscle fibers make alpha-actinin-3 - a protein tied to power and sprint performance.

Muscle Enzyme Baseline: Two positions that each raise how much creatine kinase sits in your blood at rest, which is one reason healthy people differ from each other on this test.
