About Motion Sickness

Motion sickness happens when what the inner ear senses and what the eyes see stop agreeing, and the body reacts to the mismatch. How strongly that reaction fires varies a lot between people. This card reads a single letter change in the control region of ADRA2A, the gene for an adrenaline receptor involved in the autonomic responses behind nausea. One study of 315 students in China found the G version more common in the more susceptible half, sorted by questionnaire score rather than by any voyage. That is one study, in one population, so read this as a hint rather than a verdict.

Good to know: This rests on a single study of 315 people, so treat it as a hint rather than an answer. Motion sickness comes from a mismatch between what the inner ear feels and what the eyes see. How easily motion affects you usually peaks in childhood and often eases with repeated exposure.

Fun fact: Almost everyone can be made motion sick given strong enough motion. In tests using rotating rooms it turns out to be a matter of degree rather than a yes or no.

Discovery: This promoter change was tied to how easily people get motion sick in 2021.

Other lifestyle traits

Leg to Torso Ratio: A marker between two genes on chromosome 5, linked to how a given height is divided between legs and torso.
