About Joint Flexibility

Type V collagen does not make up much of a tendon by mass, but it controls how the far more abundant type I collagen assembles: it regulates how thick the resulting fibrils grow. Type V collagen does not make up much of a tendon by mass, but it controls how the far more abundant type I collagen assembles: it starts new fibrils and limits how wide they grow. Where there is less of it, fewer fibrils form and the ones that do grow thicker. This variant sits in the untranslated tail of the gene, a region that influences how long the message survives, and it has been associated with measured range of motion in several studies.

Good to know: Type V collagen controls how thick the main collagen fibrils grow. Stiffer tissue returns energy better; suppler tissue gives more range. Habitual stretching moves measured flexibility far more than this variant.

Fun fact: Tendon behaves like a spring during running, storing and returning a large share of the energy of each stride rather than muscle supplying it all.

Discovery: COL5A1 variants were first associated with measured range of motion in 2009.

Other lifestyle traits

Lactate Clearance: A change in the transporter that carries lactate into the muscle and heart tissue that burns it as fuel.

Training Response: A change in the gene for the signal that grows new blood vessels, looked at for how people adapt to different kinds of training.

Thigh Muscle Volume: A change in the calcium channel that triggers muscle contraction, linked to measured thigh muscle volume.
