Valsartan (Diovan)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Valsartan

What it is

Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB): it stops angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels and making the body hold salt. It is used for high blood pressure, heart failure and after a heart attack, and combined with sacubitril (Entresto) for heart failure with reduced pumping. It is sold as Diovan, among other names.

How genes come into it

Valsartan is barely broken down; it is excreted mostly unchanged in bile, taken into the liver by SLCO1B1 and SLCO1B3. The gene study listed looked at AGT, the angiotensinogen gene, for blood pressure response. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Response (1 finding)

Studies of how well it worked in people carrying a variant.

AGT rs699: Genotype GG is associated with decreased clinical benefit to valsartan in people with Hypertension as compared to genotypes AA + AG.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
