Tiotropium (Spiriva)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Tiotropium

What it is

Tiotropium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA): inhaled once daily, it blocks acetylcholine receptors on airway muscle, keeping the airways open for 24 hours. It is a mainstay treatment for COPD and is added for asthma that is not controlled by an inhaled steroid and LABA. It is sold as Spiriva.

How genes come into it

Very little tiotropium is absorbed into the blood, and most of that is cleared by the kidneys. The gene study listed, from an asthma trial, looked at ADRB2 to see whether tiotropium helped people whose beta-2 receptor genotype was linked to a poorer response to beta-2 agonists. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

What research found

Every published finding on gene variants and Tiotropium. Upload your DNA file to see which of these rows apply to you.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

ADRB2 rs1042713: Level 3. Efficacy: Asthma. 1.

Response (1 finding)

Studies of how well it worked in people carrying a variant.

ADRB2 rs1042713: Genotype AA is associated with increased response to tiotropium in people with Asthma as compared to genotypes AG + GG.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
