Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Eldepryl

What it is

Selegiline is an MAO-B inhibitor: it blocks monoamine oxidase B, an enzyme that breaks down dopamine in the brain. As tablets (Eldepryl, Zelapar) it is used for Parkinson's disease, alone early on or with levodopa; as a skin patch (Emsam), which also blocks MAO-A at higher doses, it is used for depression.

How genes come into it

Selegiline is broken down mainly by CYP2B6 and CYP2A6 into desmethylselegiline and levo-amphetamine products. The gene study listed, in Parkinson's disease, looked at SLC22A1 (OCT1) for dose needs and side effects. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

SLC22A1 rs622342: Level 3. Dosage, Toxicity: Parkinson Disease. 1.

Dosing (1 finding)

Studies of how much of the drug people needed or tolerated.

SLC22A1 rs622342: Allele C is associated with increased dose of amantadine, Anticholinergics, levodopa or selegiline in people with Parkinson Disease.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
