About Medrol

What it is

Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid, somewhat stronger than prednisolone, that calms inflammation and the immune system. As tablets (Medrol) it is used for many inflammatory and allergic conditions; as high-dose drips (Solu-Medrol) for multiple sclerosis relapses, organ transplant rejection and severe flares of autoimmune disease; and as joint injections (Depo-Medrol).

How genes come into it

Methylprednisolone is broken down mainly by CYP3A4 and is pumped out of cells by ABCB1. The gene study listed looked at ABCB1 for side effects. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
