Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Dopamine Agonists

What it is

Dopamine agonists are a class of medicines that activate dopamine receptors directly. They include pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine (as a patch) and apomorphine for Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome, and bromocriptine and cabergoline, which lower prolactin. Impulse control problems are a known side effect of the Parkinson's medicines. This page collects studies on the class as a group.

How genes come into it

The single gene study listed for the class, in Parkinson's disease, looked at SLC22A1 (OCT1), an organic cation transporter, for dose needs and side effects. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline. Ropinirole is broken down by CYP1A2, while pramipexole is cleared by the kidneys; each has its own page.
