Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that blocks bacteria from building their cell wall. Given once daily by injection or drip, it treats pneumonia, meningitis, gonorrhoea, Lyme disease affecting the nervous system, and many other serious infections. It is sold as Rocephin, among other names.
Ceftriaxone is not broken down; it is cleared about half by the kidneys and half into bile. Studies, mostly in critically ill patients, looked at transporters that move it into bile and urine (ABCB1, ABCG2, ABCC2, ABCB11, SLCO1A2) for its blood levels. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
