Cefotaxime (Claforan)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Cefotaxime

What it is

Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that blocks bacteria from building their cell wall. Given by injection or drip, it treats meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia and other serious infections, and is often used in newborns. It is sold as Claforan, among other names.

How genes come into it

Cefotaxime is partly broken down to an active product and cleared by the kidneys, where the transporter SLC22A8 (OAT3) moves it into the urine. The gene study listed looked at SLC22A8 variants for its clearance. The findings come from a single study, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
