COMT is an enzyme that clears dopamine out of the prefrontal cortex, the brain region behind planning and focus. This common variant changes how fast it works: the slow version leaves more dopamine around (often nicknamed the 'Worrier'), while the fast version clears it quickly (the 'Warrior'). In everyday life the effect on thinking and stress is subtle, and easily shaped by sleep, mood, and context - so it's one influence among many, not a fixed label.
Good to know: The effect is subtle and easily outweighed by sleep, mood, and caffeine. Neither end is 'better' - each trades focus against stress resilience. This is one gene within a much larger system.
Fun fact: Caffeine and stress both shift prefrontal dopamine, often mattering more day-to-day than your COMT type.
Discovery: The 'warrior / worrier' framing emerged from cognitive studies in the early 2000s.
