Valganciclovir (Valcyte)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Valganciclovir

What it is

Valganciclovir is an oral prodrug of ganciclovir, an antiviral that, once activated inside infected cells, blocks the DNA polymerase of cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is used to prevent CMV disease after organ transplants and to treat CMV infection of the eye in people with HIV, and for congenital CMV in babies. Low blood counts are its main side effect. It is sold as Valcyte.

How genes come into it

Valganciclovir is converted to ganciclovir in the gut and liver, and ganciclovir is cleared unchanged by the kidneys. The gene studies listed looked at ABCC4 and ABCB1, transporters that move ganciclovir out of cells, for side effects such as low white cell counts. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
