Ustekinumab (Stelara)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Ustekinumab

What it is

Ustekinumab is a biologic medicine, a monoclonal antibody that blocks the shared p40 part of two immune signals, interleukin-12 and interleukin-23, which drive several inflammatory diseases. Injected every few months after a starting phase, it is used for plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It is sold as Stelara and as biosimilars.

How genes come into it

As an antibody, ustekinumab is not broken down by drug-processing enzymes. The most discussed finding is HLA-C*06:02: people with psoriasis who carry it responded better in several studies. Others looked at immune genes such as IL12B, IL1B, TNFAIP3 and toll-like receptor genes. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
