Thiazide diuretics are a class of medicines that block the sodium-chloride cotransporter in the kidney, so more salt and water leave the body, and over time they relax blood vessels. The class includes hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, indapamide and bendroflumethiazide, used as first-line medicines for high blood pressure and for fluid retention. Low potassium and raised blood sugar and uric acid are known side effects. This page collects studies on thiazides as a group.
Studies of the class looked at SLC12A3, the gene for the transporter thiazides block, and at NELFCD, GNB3, ACE and AGTR1 for blood pressure response and metabolic side effects. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
