About Tenoxicam

What it is

Tenoxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam family, closely related to piroxicam. It blocks the COX enzymes that make prostaglandins and lasts long enough to be taken once a day. It is used for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and painful inflammation of joints and tendons. It is sold as Mobiflex and Tilcotil, among other names, outside the US.

How genes come into it

Tenoxicam is broken down mainly by the liver enzyme CYP2C9, and it already stays in the body for several days. People with reduced-function versions such as *2 and *3 clear it more slowly, so levels rise higher and stay longer. CPIC has published a guideline on CYP2C9 and the NSAIDs, including tenoxicam.

Published guidelines

Clinical guidelines that name a gene for Tenoxicam. They sort people into groups by the gene copies they carry.

CPIC guideline: CYP2C9. CYP2C9 activity score 0 to 2. Strong. 2020.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

CYP2C9 CYP2C9*1, CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*3: Level 1A · replicated. Metabolism/PK. 2.
