About Sympathomimetics

What it is

Sympathomimetics are medicines that mimic the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the sympathetic nervous system. They include adrenaline for anaphylaxis, noradrenaline, dopamine and dobutamine for shock, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine as decongestants, and beta-2 agonists such as salbutamol for asthma. This page collects studies on them as a group.

How genes come into it

The single gene study listed for the group looked at OPRM1 in the context of side effects. Gene findings for individual sympathomimetics, such as ADRB2 for the beta-2 agonists or ADRB1 for dobutamine, are on their own pages. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
