Sulfinpyrazone (Anturane)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Sulfinpyrazone

What it is

Sulfinpyrazone is a uricosuric medicine: it blocks the reabsorption of uric acid in the kidney, so more uric acid leaves in the urine. It was used for long-term treatment of gout and, because it also inhibits platelets, was studied after heart attacks. It has largely been replaced by other medicines and is no longer marketed in many countries. It was sold as Anturane.

How genes come into it

Sulfinpyrazone is broken down partly by the enzyme UGT1A9, and a single study looked at UGT1A9 variants for its clearance. It is also a strong blocker of CYP2C9, which affects other medicines such as warfarin. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Rated evidence (1 rated variant)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

UGT1A9 rs72551330: Level 3. Metabolism/PK. 1.

Metabolism (1 finding)

Studies of how quickly the body processes this medication.

UGT1A9 rs72551330: Allele T is associated with increased metabolism of sulfinpyrazone as compared to allele C.
