Sulfadoxine

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Sulfadoxine

What it is

Sulfadoxine is a long-acting sulfonamide that blocks folate production in malaria parasites. It is used combined with pyrimethamine (SP, Fansidar) for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy and, with amodiaquine, for seasonal malaria prevention in children in parts of Africa.

How genes come into it

In people with G6PD deficiency, sulfonamides such as sulfadoxine can cause haemolysis, the breakdown of red blood cells. The gene studies listed looked at G6PD in people receiving sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, often combined with other antimalarials. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
