Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressant prodrug: the body turns it into mycophenolic acid, which blocks IMPDH, an enzyme lymphocytes need to make DNA building blocks, so they cannot multiply. It is used with other medicines to prevent rejection after kidney, heart and liver transplants, and for lupus kidney disease and other autoimmune conditions. It is sold as CellCept, among other names.
Because MMF becomes mycophenolic acid, the same genes are studied: UGT1A9 and UGT1A8, which clear it, the transporters SLCO1B1, SLCO1B3 and ABCC2, and its targets IMPDH1 and IMPDH2, linked in some studies to rejection rates and side effects such as diarrhoea and low white cell counts. The findings come from single or a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
