About Loxoprofen

What it is

Loxoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid family, given as a prodrug that the body converts into its active form. It is one of the most used pain medicines in Japan, and is also sold in Brazil, Mexico and other countries, for pain, inflammation and fever; it is not available in the US or most of Europe. It is sold as Loxonin.

How genes come into it

Loxoprofen is activated by carbonyl reductase and cleared by UGT enzymes. The gene studies listed, from Japan, looked at gene regions linked to NSAID side effects such as stomach injury and hypersensitivity. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
