L-Ornithine

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About L-Ornithine

What it is

L-ornithine is an amino acid that takes part in the urea cycle, the liver's route for turning ammonia into urea. Combined with aspartate (L-ornithine L-aspartate, Hepa-Merz), it is used in some European and Asian countries to lower ammonia in hepatic encephalopathy, brain effects of advanced liver disease. It is also sold as a supplement.

How genes come into it

Ornithine is handled by the body's normal amino acid pathways, not by drug-processing enzymes. The gene study listed looked at NPC2. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
