Formoterol (Foradil)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Formoterol

What it is

Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA) that relaxes airway muscle within minutes and keeps it relaxed for about 12 hours. It is used with an inhaled steroid for asthma, where budesonide-formoterol can serve as both controller and reliever, and for COPD. It is sold as Foradil and Oxis, and in combinations such as Symbicort and Dulera.

How genes come into it

Formoterol is cleared mainly by glucuronidation and by CYP2D6 and CYP2C enzymes. The gene studies listed, from studies of budesonide-formoterol in asthma, looked at IL10 and IL17A for response. The most studied gene for beta-2 agonists, ADRB2, is covered on the class page. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Response (2 findings)

Studies of how well it worked in people carrying a variant.

IL10 rs3024498: Genotypes CC + CT is associated with decreased clinical benefit to budesonide, fluticasone/salmeterol, formoterol or omalizumab in children with Asthma as compared to genotype TT.

IL17A rs3819024: Genotypes AG + GG is associated with decreased clinical benefit to budesonide, fluticasone/salmeterol, formoterol or omalizumab in children with Asthma as compared to genotype AA.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
