Fenoterol (Berotec)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Fenoterol

What it is

Fenoterol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes airway smooth muscle. It is used as an inhaled reliever for asthma and COPD, often combined with ipratropium (Berodual), in Europe and other regions; it is not marketed in the US. It is sold as Berotec.

How genes come into it

Fenoterol is cleared mainly by sulphate and glucuronide conjugation. The gene studies on it, from volunteer studies in Germany, found that SLC22A1 (OCT1) carries fenoterol into the liver, and that people with low-function OCT1 versions had higher blood levels and stronger effects on heart rate and blood sugar. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Studies that do not fall into the groups above.

SLC22A1 rs1349294037: Genotype TAAGTTGT/TAAGTTGT is not associated with increased concentrations of fenoterol as compared to genotype del/del.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
