Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.
Etoposide (VP-16) is a chemotherapy medicine derived from the mayapple plant. It blocks topoisomerase II, an enzyme that untangles DNA, so breaks build up in the DNA of dividing cells and they die. It is used for testicular cancer, small cell lung cancer, lymphomas and leukaemias, among others. It is sold as VePesid and Etopophos, among other names.
Etoposide is broken down by CYP3A4 and pumped out of cells by ABCB1. Most gene studies on it were done in people receiving several medicines at once, such as in testicular cancer, and looked at DNA repair genes (ERCC1, ERCC2) and GSTP1 for side effects such as hearing loss and nerve damage, which are mostly due to cisplatin given at the same time. The findings come from single or a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
