Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic: it binds bacterial ribosomes and stops them from making proteins. It is used for chest, sinus, throat and skin infections, for some mycobacterial infections, and as part of the treatment that clears Helicobacter pylori. It strongly blocks CYP3A4, so it interacts with many medicines. It is sold as Biaxin and Klacid, among other names.
Clarithromycin is broken down by CYP3A4. The studies on this page are Helicobacter pylori treatments, where clarithromycin is given with a proton pump inhibitor; their link to CYP2C19 concerns the proton pump inhibitor, whose effect depends on that gene, and the VDR studies looked at cure rates. Clarithromycin itself has no strong gene association, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
