Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.
Aldosterone antagonists (mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, MRAs) block the receptor for aldosterone, the hormone that makes the kidneys hold salt and lose potassium. The class includes spironolactone, eplerenone and finerenone. They are used for heart failure, resistant high blood pressure, primary aldosteronism, fluid build-up in liver disease and kidney disease in type 2 diabetes. This page collects studies on the class as a group.
The single gene study listed for the class looked at NEDD4L, a gene that controls how long the kidney's sodium channels stay active, for blood pressure response. The evidence is weak. Eplerenone and finerenone are broken down by CYP3A4, so other medicines affect them more than genes do. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
