Toluidine blue (tolonium chloride) is a blue dye related to methylene blue. It is used to stain tissue so abnormal areas stand out, for example to help spot suspicious patches in the mouth, and in some countries as an antidote for methaemoglobinaemia.
As with methylene blue, toluidine blue can cause haemolysis, the breakdown of red blood cells, in people with G6PD deficiency, whose red cells cope poorly with oxidative stress. CPIC has published a guideline on G6PD that covers toluidine blue. Few other genes have been studied.
