Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Oseltamivir

What it is

Oseltamivir is an antiviral for influenza: it blocks neuraminidase, the enzyme flu viruses use to break free from infected cells, so the virus spreads less within the body. It is used to treat flu when started early and to prevent it after close contact. It is sold as Tamiflu.

How genes come into it

Oseltamivir is a prodrug that the liver esterase CES1 turns into its active form, which the kidneys then clear. A study linked the CES1 variant G143E (rs71647871) to much less activation, and another looked at ABCB1 for side effects. The findings come from a few studies, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.

Rated evidence (2 rated variants)

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.

ABCB1 rs1045642: Level 3. Toxicity. 2.

CES1 rs200707504: Level 3. Metabolism/PK. 1.

Metabolism (1 finding)

Studies of how quickly the body processes this medication.

CES1 rs200707504: Genotype CT is associated with increased concentrations of oseltamivir in healthy individuals as compared to genotype TT.

Study findings and evidence levels: PharmGKB (CC BY-SA 4.0). Guidelines: CPIC and DPWG, as bundled in PharmCAT. Most studies were done mainly in people of European ancestry.
