Interferon alfa-n1 is a mixture of natural interferon alfa subtypes produced by cultured human lymphoblastoid cells. It was used for chronic hepatitis B and C, mainly in Japan and some other countries, and has been replaced by pegylated interferons and then by direct-acting antivirals. It was sold as Wellferon and Sumiferon.
As a protein, interferon is not handled by drug-processing enzymes. The gene studies listed, from Japan, looked at the IFNL3 (IL28B) region, which strongly predicted whether interferon-based treatment cleared hepatitis C. There is no CPIC or DPWG guideline for interferon alfa-n1 itself.
