Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)

Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.

About Cyanocobalamin

What it is

Cyanocobalamin is a manufactured form of vitamin B12, which the body needs to make red blood cells and DNA and to keep nerves healthy. It is used to treat and prevent B12 deficiency, including pernicious anaemia (where the gut cannot absorb B12) and deficiency in people on vegan diets or after stomach surgery, by injection, tablets or nasal spray.

How genes come into it

Vitamin B12 works together with folate in the methionine cycle. The single gene study listed looked at MTHFR, whose common variant rs1801133 (C677T) affects homocysteine levels, for how much homocysteine fell with B vitamins. The evidence is weak, and there is no CPIC or DPWG guideline.
