Raw research findings for this medication. Mostly single studies, not curated or confirmed robust.
It is taken with other HIV medicines. The two are sold as Reyataz and Norvir; atazanavir is also combined with cobicistat as Evotaz.
Atazanavir blocks UGT1A1, the liver enzyme that clears bilirubin, so bilirubin often rises and can turn the skin and eyes yellow; this is harmless to the liver but a common reason people stop. People with two low-activity UGT1A1 copies (*28/*28, the Gilbert's syndrome genotype) are much more likely to develop visible jaundice, a finding rated at PharmGKB's highest level. CPIC and DPWG have published guidelines on UGT1A1 and atazanavir, on its own page.

PharmGKB weighs all studies of a variant and rates how strong the evidence is, from 1A (strongest) to 4.
UGT1A1 UGT1A1*1, UGT1A1*6, UGT1A1*28, UGT1A1*36, UGT1A1*37: Level 1A · replicated. Toxicity: HIV infectious disease, Hyperbilirubinemia. 17.
